The Next New Thing

It seems like all possible inventions of new media have been made already. It's very tough thinking about what could be the next big thing. I think something involving the MTA and new media would be cool. Possibly having buses and trains send a tweet that appears on a screen at the stop letting passengers know where they are currently and if there will be any delays. I feel like the MTA is not very technologically advanced. They do have a screen projecting the waiting time for trains at only some stations. But a tweet would involve new media and would be better. (Though I just realized you don't get cell phone service in subways underground. So I don't know how the tweet would go through.)

  1. That's a great idea Gary. It's about time the MTA started getting some updates so that we can get more for the money. The fairs keep rising and the service keeps lowering. If a college student could rule the world for a day, boy what a difference it could make. lol

  2. I agree with the fact that it's a very good idea, although due to the cell service problem it wouldn't work with cell phones. Other transportation companies have implemented these changes and it has been a successful program. In fact, the metro-north railroad, which is part of the MTA actually just started this with some of their service lines. The problem is that it is such an expensive process that many say isn't worth the money since the MTA is already strapped for cash. I think it is inevitable that this will happen eventually, but it might have to be in a long time, after the MTA figures out its financial problems.

  3. This would be a great idea. However, like you mentioned, there is no service underground, making it difficult to see tweets. But, if the MTA would simply post the information on their website, as well as, on signs around stations (like they are already doing with the L trains) that would be just as good. I was in Kyoto, Japan 5 years ago, and the subways there were amazing. Solely because they had the exact time the train would arrive posted on signs all over the stations. More people seem to use (this is speculative of course) and trust the public transit there more then they do here in NYC, likely due to the fact that they are able to see the information about train arrivals and delays as soon as they enter the station.

  4. I like this idea a lot because I always end up waiting for the train/bus. And although they have a set schedule that is posted online, I never think they come on time. Better yet it would be great if the buses/trains could be tracked via an app which would have a GPS built in that would show EXACTLY where the train/bus is currently located! Can't wait for that!
